Recent research has found that complementary healing modalities can be important adjuncts to traditional infertility treatments including in-vitro fertilization. Acupuncture, massage, and hypnosis as well as nutrition and stress-reduction counseling may enhance treatment outcome.
It is possible that complementary modalities decrease the negative effect that stress hormones - the chemical messengers that cause the "fight or flight" response - have on our bodies. During times of prolonged stress, which can occur for some patients undergoing infertility treatment, stress hormones may be present in the body for long periods of time and may cause unwanted effects such as decreased blood flow to non-essential organs like the uterus. In turn decreased blood flow may negatively affect pregnancy rates. Perhaps one day high-tech modern medicine will fully understand the salutary effect on the body of these low-tech ancient treatments, but for now we appreciate and support their role in promoting health.
