Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) offers couples the opportunity to detect
certain chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down's Syndrome and cystic fibrosis,
as well as determine gender prior to transplant.
Before PGD was available, many couples relied on amniocentesis to determine
genetic abnormalities, and were subsequently sometimes faced with the decision
of whether or not to abort. In addition, adults who are carriers of genetically
transmitted diseases now have a way to ensure that their child will not carry
the disease.
Some parents choose to select the sex of their baby. The most common reason is a
sex-linked genetic disorder that runs in the family, like one of the 350
disorders that only affect males. Other families use PGD with the intent of
family balancing. Conceptions only provides the option of using PGD for this
purpose when a couple already has two or more children of the same sex.
