 Psychological Impact of Infertility

Infertility is stressful, and can become one of the most difficult life crises a couple ever has to face. The inability to conceive a child can create considerable feelings of loss. When these feelings are combined with the demands and uncertainties of treatment, it is not uncommon to feel emotionally out of control.

While pursuing infertility treatment, it is normal to cycle through emotional highs and lows, including periods of feeling overwhelmed. However, if you experience extreme sadness that doesn't lessen over time, and a loss of interest in your normal activities, you may benefit from working with a mental health professional.

Other signs that you could benefit from psychological counseling include:

×           Strained interpersonal relationships

×           Difficulty concentrating on anything but infertility

×           Difficulty completing tasks

×           Changes in sleep patterns

×           Changes in appetite or weight

×           Increased levels of anxiety

×           Increased use of drugs or alcohol

×           Thoughts of death

×           Persistent feelings of guilt, worthlessness or pessimism

×           Persistent feelings of anger

Most patients find counseling helpful while undergoing treatment, and it is now routinely considered part of a comprehensive approach.
